Abstract
Whether in smart homes, autonomous driving, healthcare, or space applications, over 500 billion devices are expected to be wirelessly connected by 2030. This exponential increase in data traffic demands higher frequency operation, greater integration, and significant miniaturization of all RF components—often integrating multiple radios in a single system. This lecture will explore the implications of these trends for microwave front-end technologies. Topics include:

  • Emerging challenges and opportunities for 5G and beyond
  • The optimum semiconductor mix and predicted market growth
  • Innovative passive components and antenna-filter integration (“filtennas”)
  • Use of metamaterials to enable advanced functionalities
  • Integration challenges and the need for novel measurement methodologies
  • A new calibration approach with error estimation
  • Front-end amplifier design and heterogeneous integration using embedded GaN devices

These discussions will highlight the interplay between system demands and circuit innovation, focusing on practical examples and future perspectives.
